4 Essential Maintenance Tips for Ultralight Carbon Wheels
At Light Travel Cycling, we engineer ultralight carbon wheels and rims for riders who demand low weight, high stiffness, and lasting reliability. Proper maintenance makes the difference. Here are four factory-recommended techniques.
1. Correct Cleaning – Protect the Resin
Let rims cool for 30 minutes after riding – hot carbon + cold water risks resin cracks. Rinse with low-pressure water to remove grit. Never use a pressure washer. Apply pH-neutral cleaner (1:10–1:20 dilution). Let sit for 1–2 minutes. Wipe gently along the rim direction with a microfiber cloth or soft brush. Rinse, blot dry, then air dry. Avoid strong acids, alkalis, abrasives, or metal brushes. For bird droppings or sap: apply diluted cleaner with a wet compress for 5 minutes, then wipe gently – never scrape.
2. Spoke Tension – Stiffness & Durability
Uneven or incorrect spoke tension leads to rim deformation, broken spokes, or bearing damage. Signs of trouble: wheel feels soft, poor handling, brake rub, creaking under power, or visible loose/broken spokes. What to do: Always use a calibrated tension meter – don’t guess by plucking. Consult a professional wheel builder or Light Travel Cycling for factory specs (typically 120–140 kgf for our rims). Never randomly tighten or loosen spokes – you can warp the carbon rim. If you hear intermittent creaking while climbing or sprinting, stop and have the tension checked.
3. Bearing Maintenance – Smoothness = Speed
Inspection: Spin the wheel – feel for friction, vibration, or a gritty sensation. Rock the wheel side-to-side to check for lateral play. Adjusting preload (if your hub allows): Loosen the lockring. Turn the preload ring gently by hand until smooth and play-free. Do not overtighten. Retighten the lockring. Do not add oil to sealed bearings. Once they feel rough or loose, replace the entire bearing set (contact us for sizes – we use standard bearings like 6802, 6902). In wet/muddy conditions, consider replacement every 2,000–3,000 km.
4. Tire Safety – Your Only Contact Patch
Tubeless setups: Replenish sealant every 4–6 months. Check the valve stem lockring for tightness. On hookless rims – follow “wide tire, low pressure.” Never exceed the rim’s max pressure (usually 72–80 psi). Clinchers & tubulars: Check pressure before every ride. Inspect for cuts, bulges, or glue/tape lifting (tubulars). Replace immediately if you see: 45° sidewall cracks Cracks at tread base Large cuts (>2mm) or bulges Exposed casing or cord
