Finishing and Painting

After every structural inspection is complete, each Light Travel rim moves to the finishing line, where a small team of experienced technicians brings the wheel’s final appearance to life. Unlike mass‑produced rims that rely on automated painting robots, Light Travel rims are finished entirely by hand — a deliberate choice that ensures both exceptional surface quality and the ability to offer custom colors and graphics.

The process begins with meticulous sanding. Technicians use progressively finer grits of sandpaper to smooth any microscopic mold marks, eliminate surface imperfections, and gently feather the edges around spoke holes and joints. This step is critical not just for appearance but also for ensuring that subsequent coatings adhere evenly.

Once the rim surface is perfectly prepped, a thin, even layer of primer is applied. The primer fills any remaining pinholes, improves paint adhesion, and provides a uniform base tone. After the primer cures, it is lightly sanded again to achieve a glass‑smooth foundation.

The next step is painting. Each rim is sprayed with high‑quality automotive‑grade paint — available in a standard palette or fully customized to the customer’s request. Multiple thin coats are applied to build depth and color saturation without dripping or orange peel. For two‑tone or fade designs, technicians mask specific sections and layer the colors by hand.

Finally, labels and logos are applied. Depending on the design specification, this may involve precision‑cut vinyl decals, painted stencils, or under‑clear graphics that are then sealed with a clear coat. The clear coat adds UV protection, chemical resistance, and a deep, lustrous finish.

Throughout the finishing process, technicians double as quality inspectors. As they sand, prime, paint, and label, they examine every millimeter of the rim’s surface for hidden voids, pinholes, or coating irregularities. Any defect discovered at this stage is corrected before the rim proceeds — or, if necessary, the rim is stripped and refinished. This hands‑on inspection ensures that no rim leaves the factory with a compromised surface.

The result is more than just a beautiful wheel. It is a custom‑built rim that reflects the care and attention invested in every step — from raw carbon fiber to the final clear coat. A Light Travel wheel is not only engineered to perform, but also finished to be as unique as the rider who will ride it.
