Wheelset lateral stiffness test

Lateral stiffness refers to the side-to-side deflection of a rim or wheel. A wider wheel deflects less from side to side and therefore has higher lateral stiffness. Laterally stiffer wheel feel more direct under high-power acceleration and offer sharper steering, but may feel harsh. The ideal choice depends on rider weight, riding type, and terrain. Road racers may prefer stiffer wheelsets; gravel and long-distance riding require a balance with comfort; DH riders may prefer lower lateral stiffness; and enduro riders often choose medium stiffness. Factors affecting wheel stiffness include spoke count, gauge, material, and lacing pattern, but the rim has the most significant effect: wider, deeper, and thicker rims, as well as carbon fiber layup design, all change stiffness. Note that stiffness does not equal strength; design must balance the stiffness-to-weight ratio with the intended use.
